I am an Office Administrator. My title is a whopping two words, and yet, I’m not sure how to describe exactly what it is that I do. What I do know, is that I love my job. Becoming an Office Administrator has put me on a path of self-discovery and growing confidence. A path that, a year ago, I would have never imagined myself walking.

Now… if you’re reading this, you’re probably asking yourself “Why did she name a career blog Earth to Reception?”

Earth to Reception handwriting

Let me tell you a story that starts at my desk, as most Admin stories do. It was a busy day in the office… Phone ringing off the hook, stragglers hanging around reception, lack of water in the Keurig Machine, and a never-ending queue of emails in my inbox. I begin feel as though I am simultaneously juggling the planet’s needs. In moments like these, everyone is screaming “Earth to Reception”. This is of course a MASSIVE hyperbole… What’s a good story without a hyperbole!?

With the Earth on my shoulders, my eyes start glaze over, stress creeps its way up my chest, and I am ready to mentally check out for the day. But, I don’t – As an Office Administrator, I can work through it with a little prioritizing and some darn good coffee. All stresses aside, I enjoy the challenges that come with working in an office environment. No day is ever the same, and I feel like my job is always changing. Being an Office Administrator is helping me learn where I fit in with the rest of the world, because it’s a career that highlights my strongest strengths and my weakest weaknesses (try saying that 5 times fast).

Second question you’re likely asking yourself is “Who are you, and how are you qualified to write a lifestyle career blog for Office Admins?”

Jenny Thompson - Earth to Reception

Hi! I’m Jenny, and I’m not an expert, but I want to be. Join me on this crazy ride, and perhaps we can all become experts together. I don’t want to preach – I want to learn. There’s much more to being an Office Administrator than filling the Keurig and responding to emails, and this blog is going to lay it all out. My experiences as a twenty-something, career-driven, extremely awkward individual.

The goal of this blog to relate and grow with you. The goal is to share the good days, the bad days, and all of the in-between days. And finally, the goal is to share tips and tricks that I’ve picked up along the way. This blog is dedicated to all of the hard-working admins out there, who are looking for a place to read about one of their own. This blog is also dedicated to the future hard-working admins who are stuck in typing courses and hoping to land their first Admin position. Right?! I find that a lot of people almost get lost in the 9-5. Creativity in the workplace is so important for this reason. I hope to help a lot of people see this. Thank you for your comment, Sarah 🙂

Wow! What a great post?! I wish you all the best in this path that you’re taking. As long as it makes you happy and fulfilled, that’s all that matters. You can preach what you are learning- that’s what the other preachers are doing. 🙂
